These poster's brief messages touted the destinations and services of the five Chicago-based Insull companies including the Chicago Rapid Transit Company, the Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad, the Chicago North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad, the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad, and the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois. Many of the artists hired were students from the Art Institute of Chicago. A few of them went on to have long careers in commercial illustration.
In an effort to protect this body of historically significant and beautifully rendered art, ShadySide of the Tracks has partnered with the Calumet Regional Archives at Indiana University Northwest in an extensive preservation project. To date there are 63 of the original posters housed at the archives, the largest single collection of the Poster and Brochure Art of the Insull Companies in the world. The artwork is currently in several stages of restoration. We hope to continue the preservation project with the love and respect these pieces deserve and to encourage awareness of the unique value and beauty that they possess.
